Swim Meets

Basic details of a Summer League Swim meet

  • Summer Swim meets are 70 Events (50 Individual and 20 Relays)
  • 1 or more are usually impacted by weather, delays or cancellations
    • its important to listen for updates from Coaches/Board
      • Meets have been won or lost due to swimmers/parents leaving a meet during a rain delay and then meet resumes
  • Events are broken into various age groups
  • 6& Unders are commonly referred to as "Shrimpers"
  • Shrimpers only have 1 event (25 Free) however a 6&U can swim in any of the 8&Under stroke events (Back, Breaststroke, Butterfly) or the 10&Under IM (rare)
  • Meet are generally 3-3.5 hours
  • Bring comfortable seating
  • Patronize the concession stands when possible, that money goes to help teams fund operations/year end banquets, etc
  • 30 minutes before the meet begins (usually 6pm) mark your swimmers arm with Event, Heat, Lane for each event they are swimming. This will help your swimmer and the clerk of course with seeding the swimmers for their races
  • Cheering for your teammates (and the other team) is of utmost importance and good sportsmanship is always in style.
  • There will be a team cheer just before the meet starts, its fun and a good way to promote good teambuilding.
  • Swimmers that finish their races MUST wait in the water until all swimmers in their heats complete the race. Jumping out of the pool before everyone finishes is not good sportsmanship.
  • Relays are comprised of 4 swimmer, plus coaches usually put in 2 alternates in case anyone gets injured, sick, lost (probably on the playground, a No No)
  • Individual Events score 5,3,2,1 - Relays Score 10-6
  • There can be an A, B, and C relay teams for each team. Only the A relay generally is able to score, meaning each Relay event is scored 10-6 and both teams will score unless there is a Disqualification (DQ)
    • Common DQ reasons, swimmer jumps in before incoming swimmer touches the wall, incorrect stroke form to name the more common ones.
